Caring for Your Dog During the Holidays – What to Know in Advance

The holiday season arrives and with it the question that troubles every dog owner: what do we do with Max, Bella or Azar? There are more options than you might think – and each has its advantages and limitations.

1 Overview of options

Carer at your home

The dog stays in its own environment, at its own pace and with its usual routine. The least stressful option for the animal. Requires a trusted person.

Sitting at the sitter's home

The dog becomes part of the sitter's family. Usually more socialisation, but you need to ensure compatibility with any of the sitter's own animals.

Dog hotel or boarding kennel

Professional facilities with veterinary care available. Not suitable for timid or under-socialised dogs. Vaccination required.

Family member or friend

The advantage of trust, the disadvantage of dependence. Make sure the person truly knows what care involves and has the time for it.

2 How to choose the right option

It depends on your dog's temperament and age.

  • Anxious or older dog – best at home, where they know the environment
  • Social and energetic dog – will cope well with sitting at the sitter's or a hotel
  • Dog with health needs – choose an experienced carer or a hotel with veterinary supervision
  • Puppy under 6 months – requires an experienced carer, intensive supervision
What matters most isn't the option, but the specific person. A bad hotel is worse than a good neighbour.

3 What to have ready before you leave

  • Valid vaccination record (rabies, distemper, parvovirus)
  • Anti-parasite treatment – apply at least 48 hours in advance
  • Dog licence and microchip number – in case of escape
  • Enough food for the whole period, plus extra
  • Vet's contact and emergency vet
  • A favourite blanket or toy – familiar scents are calming

4 Warning signs after your return

Watch for these behavioural changes after returning from sitting:

  • Loss of appetite or extreme overeating
  • Excessive drinking
  • Irritability, aggression or conversely apathy
  • Visible physical injury or significant hair loss

If you notice any of the above, visit your vet.

A holiday for both of you

A well-chosen carer or sitter means you can truly enjoy your holiday – without guilt or constant checking. It's worth investing time in the selection beforehand.
